Neighborhood rallies in support of La Montañita Food Coop in Nob Hill in response to unprecedented parking fees from new property owner.

What’s happening with parking at the Nob Hill Coop in Albuquerque?

Outrage has spread through the greater Nob Hill community and beyond as residents discover that the parking lots for La Montañita Food Coop and the Nob Hill Business Center are now subject to a $4.95 per hour parking fee.

In addition, the new property owner, Jim Long of Heritage Real Estate, has openly suggested “a new location for the Coop” and that “La Montañita’s future in its current space was uncertain.” (Albuquerque Journal, April 7, 2026)

The parking policy is causing immediate harm to existing businesses.

Multiple businesses report:

  • Sharp declines in customer traffic

  • Customers avoiding the Center due to $4.95/hour parking

  • A nearly empty parking lot during peak shopping hours

  • Employees paying substantial parking fees simply to work

What can be done?

1. First and foremost, support the Nob Hill Coop by shopping there and asking your friends to shop there as well!

2. We request that Heritage re-instate free parking as it has existed for 79 years; establish La Montañita Food Coop as the Center's anchor tenant going forward; and provide reasonable employee parking rates.

3. We request that Heritage meet and engage with the community to collaborate on a successful development strategy for the center as part of wider Nob Hill revitalization.

4. We request that Heritage provide transparency about master plans and development goals for the center.
